WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR A CDL IN TEXAS?

To apply for a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in Texas, the following requirements must be met:

  1. Be a resident of the state of Texas.
  2. Be able to communicate in English (advance level is not necessary).
  3. Pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination (medical card).
WHAT IS THE MINIMUM AGE TO APPLY FOR A CDL?

Obtaining a CDL is possible starting at 18 years old. Additionally, to work outside the home state, you must be at least 21 years old.

What kind of CDL license can I choose?

There are 3 classes of CDL that certify specialized qualifications for driving specific types of vehicles. At CDL-PRO, we offer training to obtain two classes of licenses:

  • Class A – allows you to operate combination vehicles (tractor + trailer) where the total weight exceeds 26,000 pounds. 
  • Class B – is suitable for operating commercial vehicles without trailers, where the total weight exceeds 26,000 pounds. 


WHAT TYPE OF TRANSMISSION CAN I LEARN TO DRIVE?

At CDL-PRO, we provide training for both automatic and manual transmission trucks, based on your preference. If you take the road test in a truck with an automatic transmission, your CDL will only permit you to drive vehicles of this type.
